With the Nikon D90, photography has changed from a relaxing hobby into an aggravating and stressful pasttime I increasingly try to avoid. Personally, I think the D90 and the D700 are the best value cameras Nikon make right now. Personally I am waiting for Nikon to come out with a full frame D700 version with HD video which I will buy in a heartbeat but I was tempted to pick up the D90 in the interim. I started out with the D70 and moved up the ladder (D80 after and currently I shoot with a pair of D300s) but that D90 definitely looks like a nice piece of equipment.

Technology seems to be catching up with our needs for excellent digital imagery. Technology has changed since the D90 and D700 digital cameras have been released. Also, Nikon does need to improve on the video quality in their DSLR cameras.

Thanks to the D90’s large image sensor, D-Movie images exhibit less noise than those of a typical camcorder, most notably in low-light situations. This is a landmark camera and will be the first of many remarkable all-in-one imaging devices using quality lenses and technology suitable for both modes.

The Nikon D90 is a mid-size DSLR with durable build quality without being bulky. The lack of weather-seals means it cannot handle harsh environments, like most cameras in its price-range.

Seriously, the video mode doesn’t match its photo quality, and I can’t recommend to anyone who wants to shoot video with a DSLR to buy a D90 for that. Serious amateurs will frown upon the idea, but beginners and first time DSLR owners will storm the stores in search of the black wonder. Personally, I find the use a CMOS sensor instead of the CCD and the 3-inch LCD more exciting, but hey, I’ve never been a video fan, so I might be biased.

Video people, like me, are always trying to get a film-look out of video. I think what makes the D90 interesting to me for video is it shoots HD with Nikon lenses and gives a more pro look (film-like depth of field) than even my Panasonic HVX-200 with its attached Leica lens system. Video quality is very good, though some might be frustrated that the D90 doesn’t shoot full 1080p video. For most applications, though, the D90’s 720p will be fine.

Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G - great lens and only DX compatible. Another spectacular marketing decision by your beloved company. D300 launched in september 2007 and designed more than 2 years ago. D90 launched in august 2008 designed after D300. D300 has a problem with over-exposing shots in matrix metering mode. D90 does not have this problem and seems to behave much better.

Eye-Fi and Nikon have collaborated to deliver enhanced integration of Eye-Fi wireless memory cards with the new Nikon D90 DSLR. The D90 detects when an Eye-Fi card is inserted and manage its power settings to ensure that photos upload for sharing and storing. Eye-Fi memory cards allow cameras to transmit photos through Wi-Fi hot spots. Eye-Fi has collaborated with Nikon and the Nikon D90 automatically detects when an Eye-Fi wireless card is inserted in the camera.

Nikon D90 is the first digital SLR to support movie capture, which is filled with 18-105 mm lens, 12.3-megapixel, the newly-designed DX-format CMOS image sensor and Nikon’s proprietary EXPEED image processing concept. To begin with, the camcorder is built especially for capturing video and is therefore ergonomically well thought-out. In dim light the D90 applies hellaicious amounts of noise reduction to the additional ISO it piles on.

Zooming will be similarly manual, since there are no powered F-mount Nikkor zoom lenses available, though the camera itself can’t be faulted for that of course. But, the D90’s D-Movie mode lacks any sort of digital zoom which, given the expected sensor quality, could have been both useful and had a minimal negative impact on video quality if it were limited to 2X or so. Zoom in on the subject and kit OK and you can take a 5 minute clip at max resolution (720p versus 1080i of Editor’s Choice camcorders like the Canon Vixia HG21). This is all well and good but there’s a big time ouch coming next - you cannot use auto focus when shooting video.

ISO reaches one stop further to 6400, and the burst rate notches up to 4.5 fps from 3 fps on the D80. ISO Sensitivity indicates how sensitive the camera sensor is with respect to light. In terms of exposure, the higher the ISO sensitivity, the better, as less light is needed to make an exposure.

Flash settings are essentially unchanged and both cameras’ pop-up flash units have similar power levels. Flash worked just right, not too much, not too little. I think Nikon has taken great strides to get to this point with this camera.

Canon has announced a December release date for the EOS 5D Mark II, with higher 1920×1080 resolution and more sophisticated video features than the D90, albeit with a $2700 price tag. We’re eager to test it, but expect most SLR shooters will carry separate still cameras and video camcorders for some time to come. Canon better race to catch up, they been caught sleeping.

Canon’s new model changes the design a bit from the norm, and while it’s not as stylish as the Sony W120, it definitely isn’t the plain-ol’ camera look Canons have had in the past. We recommend this camera to people looking for the best image quality possible in a smallish inexpensive form factor. Canon T1i other benefit will be an access to all Canon EOS lenses. This does not mean that Nikon can not get access to Nikon lenses.

Canon’s entry-level professional models are the 50D and 7D. The 50D has a 15-megapixel sensor and can shoot six frames per second. Canon could do nothing but follow suit. Canon was at 16mpix, and Nikon was at 12mpix on an APS sized sensor.

Canon’s new EOS 1000D lies at the bottom of the pyramid of cameras from Canon and competes directly with the Nikon D60. The camera has a rounded look which extends all the way to its buttons. Canon and Amazon are accurately anecdotic that the T1i maxes out at ISO 3200. Some beneath acclaimed dealers are advertisement an ISO 12800, which you should disregard. Canon cameras traditionally excel at low light photography. The engineers of the S90 wisely resisted the marketing urge to have the camera shoot at larger than 10 megapixels.

Canon and Nikon are OK, however most people overlook the other brands and when doing so, they might be missing out on a great camera which will really spark their creativity. The build of the Olympus cameras, especially the more entry-level ones, hearkens back to the days of the film SLR (think - everyone’s favorite, the Pentax K1000, with a balanced body on each side of the lens). Canon showed a 10 percent increase in DSLR sales over the past year - Canon gambled on a ‘cheap full-frame.’ The problem here is they have no production on a 10+ megapixel APS-C sized format and can’t/won’t use the Sony sensor because of their investment in their own sizes (1.6x and EF-S mount) and own fabrication (CMOS).

Canon has also wisely made only minor tweaks to the external interface, so that 5D users can jump right in and feel at home. Looking at the package as a whole the EOS 5D Mark II seems hard to beat.

Images are sharper, so comes with an optical image stabilizer and a sensor cleaning kit. Images are also processed and previewed rapidly at 120ms, which is less time than it takes to move an eye from the viewfinder to the screen. Users are also able to creatively stop the action with a maximum shutter speed of 1/4000 second or create long-time exposures down to 30 seconds. Imagine hooking up various lenses and shoot Hollywood-style movies using a RM4000 gear. Sure, the audio option isn’t great, but could be easily solved by getting a dedicated mic setup if you’re serious about using it to shoot some kick ass short movies.

Digital camera RAW formats retain more image information than JPEGs and can produce better results when used with imaging applications such as Aperture and iPhoto. Digital zoom only makes objects appear closer by cropping off the edges of the photo and expanding the image, resulting in lower resolution.

Even when using one of the new SanDisk Extreme III 32GB memory cards, expect to capture about 80 minutes of video on the card. Video is heavily compressed at up to 1:49, and is artifact laden as a result. A full-resolution still can be taken while filming, but video capture stops and doesn’t automatically resume. Video capture is common in lower priced point and shoot compact digital cameras but Nikon are the first to bring this capability to DSLR cameras.

Video consists of multiple still frames, (anywhere from 24-60 per second typically). Interframe compression looks at each frame, compares it to the previous one, then stores only the data that has changed.
