Asus pioneered the segment two years ago and seems to have an edge over its competitors once again. The upcoming 8.9″ EeePc T91 and the 10″ EeePC T101H are the first netbooks with a swivel screen - much like what we have seen with tablet PCs in the past. Asus can be credited with having started the whole netbook idea off.
Asus actually bundles in drivers for XP. Can run Ubuntu, too, and practically any distro you can fit into the (relatively) small hard drive. ASUS EeePC 1002HA has not been another twist in the pioneer netbook model. At a time when all people will be better with a white or a frame, the 1002HA now sports a more elegant, Gunmetal-hued look.
Asus has combated this with an overlay panel system that enables you to create three different panels with highly visual applications (sporting larger buttons and suchlike). These can be used for calendars, music, media and other popular interactive features. ASUS claims three hours for battery life, and with light use the four-cell battery certainly met that expectation. While the fan occasionally got noisy, this was generally only after hitting it with something intense like the 3D game Tux Racer. ASUS have based the desktop experience on the well known Linux KDE desktop, however they have re-written the fundamental basics with a new “Easy User Interface”. This is an innovative system using a tabbed interface, and no “Start Menu” equivalent.
According to ASUS, the name Eee derives from “the three Es,” an abbreviation of its advertising slogan for the device: “Easy to learn, Easy to work, Easy to play”. Asus has officially named the 9-inch EeePC the EeePC 900 and has released some detailed specs about the low-cost laptop. Instead of using flash memory, Asus will be using SSD (solid state drives) for storage this time. Asus have shown that a (relatively) low specification computer, doing the basics, with an easy to use interface, that works well is what a lot of people have been wanting for a long time.
